The container arrives at the port, is discharged from the vessel and then becomes available once customs and ocean carrier holds are released and the terminal has it positioned for pickup. Export drayage runs on a deadline that does not move. The vessel cutoff is set, the terminal receiving window is defined around it, and everything upstream has to fit inside that frame. That makes export planning a backward calculation rather than a forward one.

The sequence typically begins with equipment: an empty container or chassis positioned to your facility, subject to container availability from the ocean carrier. The container is loaded at the warehouse or plant, then delivered to the terminal inside the receiving window. Appointment coordination applies here as well, and terminals treat late arrivals firmly because vessel operations depend on it.

The most common cause of a missed export is optimistic loading time. If a container takes four hours to load rather than the two that were assumed, the terminal delivery slips and the cargo can wait a week for the next sailing. Realistic loading estimates protect the entire schedule and help prevent avoidable delays, missed cutoffs, and additional transportation costs. Early coordination also gives shippers more time to secure equipment, confirm appointments, prepare cargo, and adjust transportation plans when unexpected operational issues arise.
